Lawn care in Clinton, Indiana

Clinton sits on the Wabash in Vermillion County, north of Terre Haute on SR 63, and is home to 4,831 people at the 2020 census. It was founded in 1829 and named for DeWitt Clinton.

It is a compact town, a little over two square miles, and one with more history packed into it than its size suggests. Italian families came for the coal work and stayed, which is why Clinton is known as Little Italy Festival Town and why the Little Italy Festival has run every Labor Day weekend since 1966 down at Riverfront Park and South Water Street.

For lawn work that history shows up as older housing stock on established lots, which is a different job from a new subdivision and generally a more interesting one.

Clinton is in USDA hardiness zone 6, the same as the rest of this part of Indiana, and the lawns are cool-season grass: Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass and fescue, usually as a mix.

Purdue Extension's guidance for the southern half of the state is to mow at three inches or higher. On the older, established lots that make up much of Clinton this matters more than it sounds, because a lawn that has been in place for decades has a root system worth protecting and a short cut in July is what damages it.

Being right on the Wabash, Clinton has the river bottom on one side of it, and Riverfront Park is a public access site as well as the home of the festival. Properties toward the river sit differently from the ones up on the town side, and that shows in how they drain and how they need to be cut after a wet stretch.

The season runs between an average last spring freeze around mid April and an average first fall freeze around the third week of October, on the National Weather Service averages for this part of Indiana. Leaf cleanup has to be finished inside that window, and after it the work is driveways and walks.

Our house is one of the older ones downtown. Does that change anything?

It changes the detail work more than the mowing. Older lots downtown tend to have established beds, mature trees and tighter access than a newer property, which affects edging, trim work and how leaf cleanup is scheduled through the fall.

When should a lawn here be overseeded?

September, with Purdue putting the window at the first through the thirtieth for this half of the state. Fall seeding takes better than spring seeding in Indiana because the soil is still warm and the weather ahead of it is cool.
