Lawn care in Brazil, Indiana

Brazil is the seat of Clay County, east of Terre Haute on US 40, and home to 8,181 people at the 2020 census. It is one of the few towns in the area that grew between 2010 and 2020 rather than shrinking.

It is a town of established residential streets rather than new development, which in practice means mature trees, settled beds and yards that have been shaped by whoever owned the house before. That is ordinary lawn work rather than anything exotic, but it is the kind that rewards a schedule over a one-off visit.

Brazil sits in the same growing conditions as the rest of this part of Indiana: USDA hardiness zone 6, planted in cool-season grass, usually a mix of Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass and fescue.

Purdue Extension's number for the southern half of the state is to mow at three inches or higher. It is the same reasoning everywhere in the county: taller grass shades its own roots, holds water through the hottest stretch of the summer and leaves weeds less room to start.

Forest Park is the reason leaf season is a real job on the south side of town. The park carries 49 acres of woodland, along with a quarter-mile paved walking track, a four-field baseball complex and a golf course laid out by Pete Dye. Properties near that much mature tree cover do not get cleared in one pass, and leaving a wet mat of leaves on a lawn over winter is what kills the grass under it.

The season is bracketed by an average last spring freeze around mid April and an average first fall freeze around the third week of October, using the National Weather Service averages for this part of Indiana. Leaf work needs to be finished inside that, and after it the work turns to driveways and walks.
